The David Steele benefit Match
David Steele was unfortunately unable to participate due to selection for England against Australia at Lords the following day. The Raunds secretary, Alwyn York, sent him a telegram c/o the England dressing room at Lords saying " Congratulations David. Hit `em hard, hit `em fast and hit `em low -Raunds Town C.C. " David suitably responded with a half century against the hostile bowling of Lilley and Thompson. As a measure of thanks, he presented the Raunds club with two bats, one personally autographed and the other signed by the County team both of which are displayed in the Raunds Pavilion. A cheque in the amount of £125 was presented to David`s wife after the benefit match.
Admission to the match was 10p which included 5 free raffle tickets. A sprat to catch a mackeral.
This envelope was autographed by County cricketers David Steele and Roy Virgin also the long distance runner Derek Ibbotson who was attending a Steelie Benefit somewhere.
